TOP FUNDING OPTIONS — BRITISH COLUMBIA

01 — AT HOME PROGRAM MEDICAL BENEFITS

Provincial Medical Equipment Funding

British Columbia’s At Home Program (AHP) Medical Benefits is the nejdůležitější provincial pathway, který bych u xROVER rodiny prověřoval jako první.

Program podporuje způsobilé děti a mládež se závažným postižením a komplexními zdravotními potřebami a poskytuje medical equipment, supplies a další benefits. Mezi oficiálně uvedené kategorie patří Mobility Equipment, Seating Systems, Alternate Positioning Devices a Special Needs Strollers.

Who may qualify:

  • Children and youth ages 0–17
  • British Columbia residents enrolled in MSP
  • Living at home with a parent or guardian
  • Generally assessed as dependent in at least 3 of 4 activities of daily living — eating, dressing, toileting and washing
  • Certain children receiving direct nursing care or palliative care can qualify through alternate eligibility provisions.

What families should know:

This pathway is particularly relevant because BC specifically recognizes Special Needs Strollers as mobility equipment. A special-needs stroller may be provided instead of a wheelchair when recommended by a healthcare professional. Medical equipment must be pre-approved.

The request requires a healthcare professional’s justification describing the child's condition and equipment need, together with an equipment description and quote from an approved dealer.

xROVER Funding Note:

xROVER should not be represented as automatically covered or approved by the At Home Program. The family and healthcare professional should first determine whether the requested xROVER configuration can qualify under the program and whether vendor/product requirements can be satisfied.

BEST FIRST STEP:
Ask the child's PT, OT or healthcare team whether xROVER can be considered as a Special Needs Stroller / mobility solution under At Home Program Medical Benefits.

02 — VARIETY — THE CHILDREN'S CHARITY OF BC

Adaptive & Mobility Equipment Grants

This is an extremely strong xROVER pathway because Variety BC does not merely use generic language about disability equipment — its current Adaptive & Mobility Equipment program explicitly includes strollers.

Variety BC funds equipment including strollers, manual and power wheelchairs, adaptive tricycles, activity chairs, standing walkers, orthotics and other adaptive equipment. The organization can also provide top-up funding when government or private health coverage does not pay the full eligible cost.

Who may qualify:

  • Child ages 0–19
  • B.C. or Yukon resident for at least three months
  • Valid Health Care Card
  • Qualified medical or developmental need recognized by an appropriate professional
  • Current household-income threshold generally CAD $85,000 or less.

Potential funding:

Adaptive & Mobility Equipment grants currently have a maximum of:

Up to CAD $4,000 per granting period

with van conversions subject to a separate higher limit. Funding remains dependent on eligibility and available funds.

The application requires supporting documentation, including professional justification and a detailed equipment quote. Variety also expects available government/private funding to be explored first where applicable.

IMPORTANT FOR xROVER USA

There is one operational issue we need to respect: Variety currently states that it can work only with Canadian vendors, suppliers and therapists.

So on the website I would present Variety as a strong potential funding resource, but not imply that xROVER USA can currently invoice Variety directly until we establish/confirm the Canadian vendor pathway.

03 — CKNW KIDS' FUND

Specialized Medical & Mobility Equipment Funding

The CKNW Kids' Fund is another strong secondary pathway for British Columbia families.

The fund provides grants for children and youth with physical, mental and social challenges throughout BC, including funding for specialized medical equipment. Its examples include wheelchairs, adaptive tricycles, accessible vehicle conversions and other specialized equipment.

There is an especially relevant mobility component: the BC Lions Roar for the Kids' Mobility Fund, a three-year $225,000 initiative supporting mobility and transportation needs including manual and power wheelchairs, adaptive tricycles, customized equipment, standing frames, home adaptations and vehicle adaptations.

Potential xROVER pathway:

  • Child or youth living in British Columbia
  • Documented physical/mobility or other special need
  • Specialized equipment supports mobility, participation or quality of life
  • Family has a funding gap that cannot otherwise be met
  • Appropriate clinical/supporting documentation can demonstrate the need

CKNW accepts individual family grant applications, and its criteria are intentionally broad enough to consider specialized needs that may fall outside government or other charitable programs.

Again, I would not state that xROVER itself is pre-approved. This is a potential individualized grant pathway.

WHICH FUNDING PATH SHOULD YOU START WITH?

Not every program is appropriate for every family — and xROVER funding is never guaranteed.

The appropriate pathway may depend on the child's age, functional needs, existing mobility equipment, professional recommendations, program eligibility, household circumstances and whether government or private insurance funding has already been explored.

xROVER USA can help families organize the information needed to explore the appropriate funding pathway.
