TOP FUNDING OPTIONS — NUNAVUT

01 — NUNAVUT SOLUTIONS GRANT

Mobility Equipment & Accessibility Funding

The Nunavut Solutions Grant is one of the most directly relevant funding resources for Nunavummiut living with mobility-related disabilities.

The program is a collaborative initiative involving the Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society (NDMS / NuAbility), the Rick Hansen Foundation and the Government of Nunavut. Its purpose is to help people with mobility-related disabilities access equipment or services that improve independence, accessibility and quality of life. (Nuability)

What May Be Supported

The program is designed to address unmet mobility and accessibility needs.

Examples of previously supported or potentially eligible needs include:

  • Mobility aids

  • Wheelchairs

  • Lifts

  • Accessibility equipment

  • Equipment that increases independence

  • Accessibility modifications

  • Disability-related services and supports. (Nuability)

NuAbility states that CAD $20,000 is allocated to support unmet needs of Nunavummiut with mobility-related disabilities through the Nunavut Solutions program. (Nuability)

Who May Qualify

The program is intended for people with mobility-related disabilities living in Nunavut.

Applications and individual requests are subject to the program's current:

  • Eligibility requirements

  • Funding availability

  • Assessment process

  • Equipment or service criteria

  • Individual approval

Potential xROVER Pathway

For an xROVER request, a family may potentially present the need around:

  • Documented mobility-related disability

  • Functional limitations in everyday and community mobility

  • Current mobility equipment

  • Need for additional adaptive mobility support

  • PT / OT or healthcare professional recommendation

  • Positioning and safety needs

  • How the equipment would increase independence and community participation

  • Recommended xROVER configuration

  • Official equipment quotation

  • Other funding sources already explored

xROVER Funding Note

xROVER is not automatically approved or funded through the Nunavut Solutions Grant.

However, because this program specifically exists to address mobility-related disability needs and access to equipment, it is a particularly relevant resource for Nunavut families to explore.

BEST FIRST STEP:
Contact NuAbility / NDMS to discuss the individual's mobility needs and determine whether specialized adaptive mobility equipment may qualify under the current Nunavut Solutions Grant.

02 — NON-INSURED HEALTH BENEFITS (NIHB)

First Nations & Inuit Medical and Mobility Equipment Coverage

The federal Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program is an especially important funding pathway in Nunavut because it provides supplementary health benefits for eligible First Nations and Inuit clients.

In Nunavut, administration is shared between the federal Northern Region and the Nunavut Health Insurance Programs Office in Rankin Inlet. (gov.nu.ca)

Who May Qualify

NIHB eligibility generally includes:

  • An Inuk recognized by an Inuit land claim organization

  • A registered First Nations person under the Indian Act

  • An eligible infant under one year of age whose parent is an eligible recipient. (gov.nu.ca)

If an individual has employer or other private health insurance, those benefits generally must be used before seeking reimbursement through NIHB. (gov.nu.ca)

Mobility Equipment Coverage

NIHB maintains a dedicated Mobility Equipment and Supplies Benefits List.

The current list, effective July 29, 2026, establishes eligible mobility items and services together with:

  • Coverage policies

  • Benefit codes

  • Recognized prescribers and recommenders

  • Provider requirements

  • Prior approval requirements

  • Replacement guidelines

  • Repairs and warranties.

Potential xROVER Pathway

A potential adaptive mobility request may involve:

  • Confirmed NIHB eligibility

  • Documented functional mobility impairment

  • PT / OT or other recognized professional assessment

  • Current mobility equipment

  • Clinical justification

  • Positioning and safety requirements

  • Appropriate prescription or recommendation

  • Recommended adaptive mobility configuration

  • Official equipment quotation

  • Prior approval where required

xROVER Funding Note

xROVER is not automatically an NIHB-approved mobility device.

NIHB coverage depends on whether the requested equipment satisfies an applicable benefit category, clinical criteria, recognized prescriber/provider requirements and the applicable prior-approval process.

Families should therefore not purchase an xROVER expecting NIHB reimbursement before coverage has been confirmed.

BEST FIRST STEP:
Eligible Inuit or First Nations families should work with their PT, OT, healthcare professional and NIHB/Nunavut benefits contact to determine whether their adaptive mobility needs fall within an eligible NIHB mobility-equipment category.

03 — INUIT CHILD FIRST INITIATIVE (ICFI)

Individualized Health, Mobility & Disability Support for Inuit Children

For eligible Inuit children, the Inuit Child First Initiative (ICFI) is another important pathway to explore when a child's health, social or educational needs are not adequately being met through existing services.

The initiative is designed to help Inuit children access essential government-funded health, social and educational products, services and supports.

What May Be Supported

For xROVER families, the federal government's examples of potentially eligible health-related requests are particularly relevant.

They specifically include:

  • Mobility aids

  • Medical supplies and equipment

  • Physiotherapy

  • Occupational therapy

  • Assessments and screenings

  • Medical respite care

  • Wheelchair ramps

  • Transportation to child-specific medical appointments.

The initiative can also consider certain child-specific social and educational supports.

Potential xROVER Pathway

For an eligible Inuit child, a potential request may involve:

  • Documented disability or health-related mobility need

  • Functional limitations

  • Existing mobility equipment

  • PT / OT or healthcare professional assessment

  • Explanation of the child's unmet mobility needs

  • Positioning and safety requirements

  • Clinical or functional justification

  • Recommended xROVER configuration

  • Official equipment quotation

  • Information about existing programs and coverage

Individual Needs Matter

ICFI requests are considered according to the individual circumstances and needs of the child.

The program is therefore particularly relevant when an eligible Inuit child faces a gap in access to a health, social or educational product, service or support that is needed to achieve substantive equality.

xROVER Funding Note

xROVER is not automatically funded or approved through the Inuit Child First Initiative.

The fact that ICFI specifically recognizes mobility aids and medical supplies and equipment establishes a potentially relevant funding pathway, but each request requires individual assessment and approval.

The request should accurately document the child's actual functional needs and should never characterize recreational equipment as medically or functionally necessary when that is not the case.

ADDITIONAL NUNAVUT RESOURCE

EXTENDED HEALTH BENEFITS

Medical Supplies & Equipment Coverage

I would put Nunavut Extended Health Benefits (EHB) immediately below the TOP 3 rather than replace ICFI with it.

For eligible Nunavut residents who are not accessing comparable coverage elsewhere, EHB can provide supplementary health coverage. Nunavut's published program information includes coverage for eligible medical supplies and equipment, and higher-cost equipment can require coordination with the Nunavut Health Insurance Programs Extended Health Benefits office. (gov.nu.ca)

This makes EHB an important pathway to check for residents whose circumstances do not place them within NIHB or ICFI.

xROVER Funding Note

EHB should not be interpreted as automatic xROVER coverage.

Any specialized adaptive mobility request would need to meet the program's current medical-equipment eligibility and authorization requirements.

WHICH FUNDING PATH SHOULD YOU START WITH?

Not every funding program is appropriate for every family — and xROVER funding is never guaranteed.

For Nunavut, I would guide families according to their individual eligibility rather than suggest that all three programs can simply be combined:

Mobility-related disability with an unmet equipment need
→ Explore the Nunavut Solutions Grant

Eligible Inuit or First Nations client seeking medically necessary mobility equipment
→ Explore NIHB

Eligible Inuit child with an unmet health, mobility, social or educational need
→ Explore the Inuit Child First Initiative

Other eligible Nunavut resident requiring supplementary medical-equipment coverage
→ Explore Extended Health Benefits

The appropriate pathway may depend on the individual's age, Inuit or First Nations eligibility, functional mobility needs, existing equipment, professional recommendations, other insurance coverage and whether the requested equipment satisfies the applicable program criteria. (gov.nu.ca)

xROVER USA can help families identify potential funding pathways and organize the information needed to begin the process.
